WILDBLUE SATELLITE INTERNET SPOT BEAM'S

Get WildBlue

There are a few  Satellite Internet players  in this field. DirecWay and Starband have been in business for quite some time, and the new kid on the block is WildBlue. DirecWay and Starband have used the KU band, or frequency, to transmit, whereas WildBlue is using the KA band. The main difference here is that the KA band is much less crowded than the KU band. Up until now most satellite transmissions such as television etc. have used the KU band. They also had one large footprint that covered the entire Continental United States, or CONUS. WildBlue is using more contemporary technology and has 31 individual spot beams.

This spot beam technology enables WildBlue to reuse frequencies (frequency sharing) in the other spot beams and thereby maximize their bandwidth usage. The key to comprehending the concept is this, it's not that they can put more people into one beam, it's that they have more beams to put people into. Instead of one big footprint, there are 31 individual footprints, each of them distinct from the others. This new spot beam and frequency-sharing technology gives the WildBlue satellite internet system ten times the bandwidth capacity of the old KU band satellites.
