It is hard to imagine, but the broadband internet connection is a relatively young thing. It wasn’t that long ago that the world was first introduced to email and
websites, but it has now become common knowledge and we are all familiar with social media and how the internet can help influence our lives. Since it began to take off, broadband connections have helped to shape virtually every aspect of our lives. As a result, the internet continues to grow by leaps and bounds not only in the United States but also around the world.
In fact, some of the greatest internet growth has not been in the United States within the last decade, but rather in the Middle East and Africa. Since 2000, internet usage in the Middle East has grown at an astounding clip of 2,244% while in Africa the numbers have been even higher with the growth nearing 3,000%. While the actual numbers of internet connection penetration in these regions remains lower, at least more and more people are now getting internet access and these numbers are sure to continue to grow. Meanwhile, internet growth over the same time period in North America has been 152%. However, much of North America was already wired into the internet over this same time period now allowing for smaller growth numbers. In fact, almost 79% of the population in North America has internet access compared to just 13% of Africa. When you look at these numbers, it is easy to see where much of the growth is going to be coming from over the next several years. In fact, only Australia and Europe come close with the same amount of internet penetration.
In all, there are well over two billion internet users on the planet today. As more and more of the world moves toward being completely digital, this number will have to continue to grow. Right now, the most broadband internet users are found in Asia which makes since because that region is home to the highest concentration of people. That is followed by Europe and North America.
One way that the internet will continue to grow in North America is through the government’s interaction. In fact, there are programs ongoing in just about every state in order to bring the internet to regions which are currently not connected for one reason or another. This is an effort to bring all of America’s citizens online within the next few years. While it is a huge undertaking, it is beginning to pay off.
Another way for those without internet service to get online is the use satellite broadband service. With satellite, the price is affordable and the speed is reliable. The good news is that satellite service can reach anyone no matter where they are without having to depend on wires or other traditional methods of getting online. In fact, satellite broadband internet continue to grow at enormous rates as more and more people are seeing the value of using this service to get online.

I think the government should really look at all viable options. Why don’t they try getting satellite broadband as well. It may be costly now but in the long-run, satellite service providers could be a great option. Australia’s defense and mining sector relies heavily on satellite communications so the infrastructure is already in place to deliver broadband services in remote areas. There are other solutions that haven’t been considered which could deliver high-quality broadband coverage across Australia.
