Perhaps the most imminent technological danger commonly faced by rural dwelling techies is the lack of sufficient internet speeds which are commonly found in urban localities across the nation. Montana, for example, has several small ‘big cities’ by population standards and thousands of miles of ranch-land which lack expedient connectivity to any form of terrestrial based broadband service when needed. Even with 4G cellular towers and Wi-Fi hotspots running rampant across major communication networks, the FCC is still reporting that over 19 million individuals lack access to broadband networks, a fact which could literally shell shock the retiring software programmer wanting to reside in some remote cabin in the woods. How gaps in terrestrial technology can provide better broadband internet for rural areas seeking a high speed option remains to be seen, although some suggested remedies are below.
