handheld devices and finally through high speed internet service.  In fact, broadband internet service has changed the world of radio much like it has had a significant influence on just about everything else.  For example, you don’t even have to have a radio anymore to listen to the radio.  All you need is a computer and you are set to go.

There are, in fact¸ numerous radio stations which only broadcast over the internet.  Satellite internet service has also brought this same capability to people in rural areas.  So people can access these types of services regardless of where they live.  In addition, traditional radio stations are also taking to the information superhighway and broadcasting their signal there as well.  This is a smart thing to do because listeners can stay with their favorite station no matter they travel in the world as long as they have a modem and a high speed internet connection.

There are also numerous ways in which internet radio is different from traditional radio.  Of course, it is first and foremost nice that you can listen to a certain station no matter where you are located.  Traditional radio waves can only travel so far and once you have reached the end of the signal, you are forced to find something else in which to listen to.  However, internet radio does not face these same challenges.

The makings of a traditional radio station mean millions of dollars worth of equipment.  However, being heard over an internet radio is much easier to do.  In fact, for just a small investment, you can set up your own internet radio station.  The main equipment you will need is a webpage, computer, broadband connection and a microphone plus a CD player.

Radio stations are also changing in the wake of the internet.  For example, most traditional radio stations only play one brand of music such as country, Top 40 and so on.  However, internet radio stations can often play more than one particular type of music.  This allows the listener to pick what they are in the mood to hear.  Pandora works this way in that you can stream songs or artists which you are already familiar with and enjoy listening to.

In addition, many online radio stations do not broadcast a live feed.  In fact, some are more just like a very fancy music player where the listener chooses the music they want to hear rather than be subjected to whatever happens to be on at the time.  On the other hand, internet radio has allowed traditional stations to expand.  For example, National Public Radio often records many of its programs and then puts them on the web for listeners to enjoy at their own time. This means that radio stations can sell more advertising because they will have more people listening to their programs in many different ways.

As high speed internet continues to evolve, it will continue to change the way that we listen to and enjoy our favorite radio stations.
