High Speed Internet And E-book Readers

E-book readers seem to be the talk of the town these days, so I thought they would be worthy of a blog article.  It seems as if every technology related company is producing some version of an e-book reader including companies like Google, Sony, Microsoft, Amazon, and of course Apple.  In general these tablets are great products if you have access to High Speed Internet.  If this is not the case you may be severely handicapped as some of their features will not work well without broadband access.  However, if you are equipped with fast internet access and you are interested in one of these nifty gadgets the question you are probably asking is which one should I get?   Obviously Apple’s iPad is probably getting the most attentionE-Book Reading With High Speed Internetthese days, as its feature set extends beyond that of just an e-reader into something closer to a full blown personal computer.

One major differentiating factor between Apple’s iPad and almost all other pretenders is the use of an LCD screen vs. the industry standard e-ink.  E-ink is the use of a series of electronic pulses to display content on a screen.  The advantages of using e-ink are that it is slightly easier on the eyes when reading for a long period of time.  Devices that use this technology also have a much longer battery life because the battery is only being used when the user switches pages.  Meaning, the entire time you are actually reading the electronic book the battery is not being used at all.  E-ink is also easier to see when reading in direct sunlight and looks more like the actual page of a book.  However, devices with this technology can currently only display in black and white.

The advantages of an LCD screen are that it can show much more crisp and colorful images.  In addition, with Apple’s iPad one can watch full featured videos, browse the web, check email, and many other features normally only available on a desktop or laptop.  Again, the problem for many people in rural areas is going to be getting access to high-speed internet service.  The iPad can actually be synced with a wireless connection, but many rural communities do not even have access to this.  If you are in this situation and are set on getting a tablet your best option is to get satellite internet service from MyBlueDish.  They just may be able to solve your problems.
